Dental students offering free dental services, with a smile

For the fourth consecutive year, students from the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences will receive free dental screenings, teeth cleaning and a range of other oral health services. Faculty, students and staff at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Dentistry will provide the dental services to more than 80 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students on National Give Kids A Smile Day, Feb. 5. Organized in 2003 by members of the American Dental Association, National Give Kids A Smile Day was developed as a way to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children.

“Outreach to low-income and underserved communities is part of what we teach every dental student,” said UTHSC College of Dentistry Dean Tim Hottel, DDS. “In the three years since we started participating in this national initiative, our students and faculty have performed almost 2,000 dental procedures on more than 340 children. Without this program, many of these youngsters would go without the quality dental care that they need.” The value of the nearly 2,000 dental procedures donated to Memphis school children is more than $57,000.
