Memphis GEMS shine at annual tea party

The Shelby County Relative Caregiver Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) recently hosted a tea party for girls in its mentoring group.

The Relative Caregiver Program at University of Tennessee Health Science Center helps children who are being cared for by relatives when their parents are unable to do so.

The mentoring group, Girls Empowered and Mentored for Success (GEMS), aims to empower, educate and inspire middle and high school girls enrolled in the Relative Caregiver Program through positive mentoring, life skills training and exposure to successful women in the community.

The group meets at least once a month and covers topics such as self-esteem, etiquette, school success, leadership, dating, relationships and planning for the future. Speakers from the community are invited to present information to the girls.
