Memphis companies top the list of Fortune 500's Best Places to Work

Two Memphis companies, Baker Donelson and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, make Fortune 500's 2015 list of 100 Best Places to Work.

Baker Donelson came in at #30
Employees say Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC (Baker Donelson) is a large law firm with a small-firm dynamic, a place where people care about each other, successes and personal occasions are celebrated and upper management knows your name. It's the little things that add up here, from paid parking to monthly birthday celebrations and above-the-bar awards. All of it leads the majority of employees to say it's a friendly, celebratory place to work where people really care. Civic-minded problem-solvers will fit right in, but those who expect frequent and immediate feedback may not find it here.

"Baker Donelson exemplifies how large firms should value and acknowledge their employees," says one staffer. "At large firms, it's easy to feel like 'just a number' but at Baker Donelson, that's simply not the case!"

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital came in at #32
Their employees are on a crusade to cure and treat pediatric cancer and other diseases. So it's no surprise that people here feel pride in their work. Staffers also enjoy nice perks, from dinner-to-go services and fitness classes, as well as plenty of celebrations during all kinds of holidays, from a Chinese new moon festival to Mardi Gras. People say St. Jude is a friendly place and that they're given the resources to excel; those not passionate about the health care mission may want to look elswhere.

"We are leading the world in finding better cures for childhood cancers and are sharing our advances globally," one employee says. "It has special meaning to be a part of a place that wants to be the very best at doing something enormously important."
