Johns Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions Director Thomas LaVeist, PhD will make the keynote address during
Common Table Health Alliance’s Sixth Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 12. Common Table Health Alliance is a multi-stakeholder, nonprofit, regional health collaborative with the mission to achieve health equity through trust, collaboration and education.
Dr. LaVeist, who also serves as a Johns Hopkins professor in health policy and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, will speak about population health and health equity during the event which will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
“We are excited to have health disparities expert Dr. LaVeist in Memphis for one of our biggest fundraising events of the year,” said Renee’ S. Frazier, CEO of Common Table Health Alliance. “In addition to best practices, Dr. LaVeist will share a study where he found much smaller disparities among African Americans and Caucasians living in an integrated community.”
While he’s in town, Dr. LaVeist will also meet with local healthcare leaders and advocates to gather unique stories for his health disparities documentary entitled “The Skin You’re In.” To learn more about the documentary, click

Following Dr. LaVeist’s keynote address, Common Table Health Alliance will recognize its 2015 Impact Leader Award recipients. They are as follows: Art Sutherland, MD, founder of Sutherland Cardiology Clinic; Jan Young, DSNc, executive director of the Assisi Foundation; Jay Cohen, MD, medical director of The Endocrine Clinic; and Regina Walker, retired senior vice president of the United Way of the Mid-South.
Common Table Health Alliance launched the Impact Leader Awards during its 2014 Annual Meeting as a way of recognizing local individuals who have worked to make significant improvements to health and healthcare in the Shelby County area.
