Starting today, people all over the world will be able to explore some of Memphis' most beautiful and compelling tourist destinations through immersive, 360-degree imagery in Google Maps. This was made possible by the partnership between the
Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau and Google Maps, through a new program called the
Street View Trekker Loan Program.
The Google Maps Street View Trekker is a 40-pound backpack with a camera system that allows the wearer to capture panoramic images from all types of locations, especially places that are only accessible by foot. The images are then stitched together and made available on Street View in Google Maps.
The Loan Program allowed the Memphis CVB to borrow the Trekker equipment and capture locations from around the city. Google Maps Street View imagery is now live in the following locations:
"What this technology and opportunity provides is an enhanced way for visitors to connect with Memphis in a way they may never have before," said Bob Hazlett, director of online marketing. "In fact, we expect many people may never get to explore this place in person, so we are happy to open it up for the world to enjoy."
"We're thrilled to bring panoramic imagery from some of Memphis' most popular locations online, enabling people around the world to visit them virtually or preview them before heading there in person," said Deanna Yick, Google Street View Program Manager. "Through our partnership with Memphis CVB, which knows these places best, these local gems are now available on Google Maps for all to enjoy.
