On Thursday, retail giant
Target announced its intention to move one of its online fulfillment centers to Southeast Memphis, creating more than 400 new jobs. The company will invest nearly $50 million into a new 900,000-square-foot facility at 5461 Davidson Road.
"We are thrilled to welcome the Target fulfillment center and its 400 jobs to the Memphis area," says
Greater Memphis Chamber President and CEO Phil Trenary in a prepared statement. "Memphis continues to attract top companies like Target with its commitment to creating a quality workforce and long-standing reputation as a center for distribution and logistics."
Hiring is scheduled to begin in early 2015, and the fulfillment center should be operational by mid-2015. The facility will be managed by a third-party vendor, Innotrac, and will service the Southeast U.S.
"We want to welcome Target to Tennessee and thank the company for investing in our state and adding more than 400 jobs to our Memphis workforce," says Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam in a prepared statement. "It goes without saying that a company like Target can choose to do business anywhere in the country, so it means a great deal that they chose Memphis. We are always grateful for announcements like these as they help us toward our goal to make Tennessee the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high-quality jobs.”
Target is the second-largest discount retail chain in the country. The company's online sales grew by more than 30 percent in the third quarter of this year, and it has two of the most downloaded retail apps: Cartwheel, a digital coupon app; and the Target app.
