Geeked Memphis announces hackathon to tackle recidivism

Geeked Memphis, a nonprofit launched early this year, is working with Goodie Nation to bring its nationally recognized programming to the Mid-South.

Geeked Memphis intends to create a community to support and celebrate Memphis’ diverse entrepreneurs, creatives and makers. Through programming and events, Geeked Memphis seeks to “put Memphis on the map for inclusive innovation,” their mission reads.

Through the partnership with Goodie Nation, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, Geeked Memphis will host a series of annual events, Goodie Ideation+ and Goodie Hack, that will bring together Memphis’ change makers and entrepreneurs to build and launch innovative solutions that address problems faced by the city’s most underserved communities.

During an upcoming all-day June event at the National Civil Rights Museum, participants will tackle the challenge of recidivism. What tech-based tools can Memphis develop to reduce recidivism in under-served communities 25 percent by 2018?

During the first half of the event, entrepreneurs will serve as mentors guiding teams as they work to break this big challenge down into manageable pieces, get intimate with the people affected by this problem, and envision bold ideas to help solve it.

During the second half of the event, teams will work with developers to build basic prototypes for their solutions and with mentors to build their first pitch deck. At the end of the event, each team will pitch their ideas and prototypes to Goodie Ideation attendees and members of the Memphis community.
