This unique partnership is making it easier for Memphians to compost food waste at home

What’s happening: It’s a match made in compost heap heaven as Memphis’s first zero-waste store and a resident and commercial compost company have announced their collaboration on a new program that makes it easier for Memphians to compost at home. Boshi Botanicals and The Compost Fairy launched their collaboration on Saturday, Aug. 10.

How it works: Boshi Botanicals and Compost Fairy are offering a $20-per-month subscription service, with new customers receiving two upcycled buckets with tight fitting lids for use at home. Customers collect their food waste and other compostable materials at home and are free to empty them at the Community Drop location as needed. Subscriptions, which are available to purchase on-site at Boshi Botanicals, also include infinite drop-offs and the ability to collect mature compost twice per year.

Why it’s important: “The Compost Fairy strives to be a stepping stone on the path to a more circular, sustainable economy. We are like a goalie before the landfill, trying to capture and divert compostable materials so that instead of becoming waste forever it can become what it wants to be: regenerative compost,” says Patrick Gridley of The Compost Fairy. “But the goalie is just the last line of defense. An essential element of sustainability is wasting as little as possible in the first place. At Boshi Botanicals they work hard to reduce waste, both in store and with the products that customers bring home.”

Who’s behind it: The Compost Fairy offers both residential and commercial compost services and a free compost drop site at the South Memphis Farmers Market at 1400 Mississippi Blvd. in Memphis. Boshi Botanicals opened in November 2023 as a zero-waste refill store that carries eco-conscious bath, beauty, and home products. Customers bring their own jars and fill up with products as needed.

What they’re saying: “Our goal at Boshi Botanicals is to be a centralized resource where people can find solutions and connect with other local organizations that help them reduce waste,” says Becky Beloin, founder and CEO of Boshi Botanicals. “We are proud to partner with Compost Fairy to help educate Memphians about the negative impacts of food waste and to provide simple solutions that can help our city grow greener and cleaner.”

Boshi Botanicals is located at 3092 Poplar Ave., Ste. 16, in the Chickasaw Oaks shopping center in Memphis.
