What’s happening: It was back in the beginnings of 2023 when word first let out that the Tennessee-based nonprofit Mental Health Cooperative would expand its footprint from Middle and East Tennessee with a new location in Shelby County. The new clinic offering comprehensive mental health care and counseling services officially opened at 3430 Summer Ave. in Memphis on Monday, April 3.
What it is: Mental Health Cooperative is a community-based nonprofit that offers behavioral health, physical health, and substance use services with a focus on those who might not otherwise be able to afford such critical care. The organization accepts all TennCare plans, and has programs for those individuals without insurance and that meet financial guidelines, including being at or below the poverty line. MHC first launched in 1993 and the Memphis location is the organization’s twelfth – and first in West Tennessee.
Why it’s important: “There is a growing need for our services for people of all ages and we want to help meet the increased demand for additional mental health resources,” says August Greeter in a statement, the Executive Director of MHC Memphis.
How they do it: MHC Memphis provides patients access to psychiatrists, care coordinators, nurses, and therapists, and regardless of a patient’s insurance status. The clinic offers psychiatry, psychotherapy, community-based care management, and substance abuse services to children, adolescents, and adults.
What they’re saying: “We want individuals who are struggling with any kind of mental health issue to feel comfortable and safe coming to us,” Geeter says. “We are here to listen, support and help anyone who is trying to cope with challenges.”
