Expedient Data Centers will invest $6 million to open a new data center in Memphis.
The new facility, at 3180 Players Lane in southeast Memphis, will employ about 20 people in the first two years. It will be Expedient Data’s first location in Tennessee and 11th company-wide.
The Pittsburgh-based company is excited to serve Memphis customers and join the local business community, said president and COO Shawn McGorry. It plans to make the facility ready for customers by July 2015.
“We believe the Memphis market will be a great complement to our existing network of interconnected data centers,” McGorry said. “It will bring an additional, geographically diverse option for our current client base, as well as a local market solution for the attractive and growing Memphis commercial sector.”
Expedient Data provides cloud computing, colocation, disaster recovery managed services and connectivity. It serves of a mix of local and national companies and currently operates 10 data centers in six U.S. markets: Boston; Baltimore; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; and Pittsburgh.
The company is taking over the Players Lane space, which was previously used as an internal data center for Hilton Hotels, and will renovate and improve it over the next several months. It initially will use about 7,500 square feet of the 35,000-square-foot building but growth plans could increase the size and scope of the operation.
Expedient Data has been in growth mode recently and has invested $22 million in the past year on existing data center expansion. It broke ground on a second data center in Columbus earlier this month.
All of its facilities – which are staffed with trained technology professional 24 hours a day, seven days a week – are interconnected, allowing the company to offer one hosting option in any of its locations.
Expedient Data currently counts about 1,500 corporate customers.
