How U of M student-athletes are getting a jolt of support from this Memphis coffee roaster

What’s happening: A unique partnership between Memphis Grindhouse Coffee and the 901 Fund has resulted in a new blend of coffee – and a new way to provide financial support to the student-athletes of the University of Memphis. It’s as natural a partnership as any for the two organizations, like sugar and cream for your coffee.

What it is: Memphis Grindhouse Coffee has announced their newly launched Charity Blend, a medium roast coffee that the company touts as both flavorful and smooth. Grindhouse Coffee will donate $1.50 per bag of coffee sold to the 901 Fund, which itself facilitates financial support to University of Memphis student-athletes while at the same time raising the profile of local charities, nonprofits, and businesses.

Why it’s important: "At Memphis Grindhouse Coffee, we believe in the power of community and supporting local initiatives,” says Rick Askew, co-founder of Memphis Grindhouse Coffee. “Through this activation, we can make a positive impact on the lives of University of Memphis student-athletes, supporting student-athletes in their athletic pursuits and beyond, both on the field and in their personal development."

How it works: The 901 Fund solicits donations from U of M fans and alumni to financially supplement and support the school’s student-athletes, helping them pay rent or buy daily essentials. The 901 Fund pays student-athletes for their NIL (name, image, and likeness) rights, and then connects them with local charities and nonprofits to raise awareness for events and causes – and at no cost to the nonprofits and charities themselves.

Grindhouse Coffee is no stranger to community development work as the company launched in 2019 with the mission to donate a portion of their proceeds to literacy causes at Shelby County Elementary Schools.

What they’re saying: "We are thrilled to partner with Memphis Grindhouse Coffee in our mission to uplift University of Memphis student-athletes,” says Clay Presley, co-founder and board member of 901 Fund. “Through the 'Fueling NIL' campaign, coffee lovers can make a tangible impact in the lives of these athletes while enjoying their favorite brew."
