Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Center opens, Aldo's Pizza Pies comes to Midtown

Methodist South Hospital opens diabetes facility

Diabetes and its subsequent health effects are a daunting issue in the Memphis area. As part of its mission to combat the disease, Methodist South Hospital in Whitehaven has created the Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Center. The new center is located in the Medical Office Complex, Suite 151, 1251 Wesley Drive. A grand opening of the facility will be held 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 13; tours will be available during the event.

The center will provide patients with comprehensive exams, self-monitoring and management tools, care coordination services, targeted educational materials and personal checkup calls between visits.

"Diabetes is a very prevalent disease in our community," Dr. Jay Robinson, Methodist South Hospital CEO, said in a prepared statement. "This center will help diabetics manage their illness while getting healthy and feeling better."

The care team for the new center includes two supervising physicians, an endocrinologist, a family nurse practitioner, a case manager and a health educator.

The service hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 1-5 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, call 901-297-0929.

Aldo's Pizza Pies to open on developing blocks of Cooper-Young

Popular Downtown restaurant Aldo's Pizza Pies is opening a second location in the old Two-Way Inn building at 752 South Cooper Street in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. The building, a long and narrow 1,900-square-foot structure, is sandwiched between Urban Outfitters to the north and the old Pie Factory, now housing Memphis Made Brewing Co., to the south.

The building is owned by Charlie Ryan and leased by Aldo's owner Aldo Dean. Ryan also owns the Urban Outfitters space and recently purchased the nearby Toad Hall Antiques building at the intersection of Cooper Street and Central Avenue. Though no plans have been announced for that space, it sits across the street from the forthcoming Truck Stop restaurant concept by restaurateur Taylor Berger and partner Michael Tauer. The blocks leading north from the iconic Cooper-Young train trestle have become ones to watch.

Construction on the 80-seat, Midtown location of Aldo's Pizza Pies, including a new patio for outdoor seating, is underway now, with plans to open later this summer.
